‘Baahubali’ Devasena is suffering from a rare disease, Anushka Shetty expresses her pain, says- ‘You will be surprised that…’

New Delhi: Actress Anushka Shetty, who became famous worldwide with the blockbuster film ‘Baahubali’, revealed that she is suffering from a rare disease. This problem is colloquially known as ‘laughing disease’, while in medical terms it is called pseudobulbar effect (PBA). In this, the sufferer suddenly starts laughing or crying uncontrollably.

42-year-old Anushka Shetty said in an interview to India Glitz, ‘I have a problem with laughter. You wonder if laughing is the problem?’ For me, this is a problem. If I start laughing, I can’t stop for 15 to 20 minutes. While watching or shooting a comedy scene, I literally fall on the floor laughing and many times I have to stop shooting.

Neurologist Dr. Sudhir Kumar told The Indian Express that ‘laughing disorder’ is called pseudobulbar effect in the medical world. Symptoms of a pseudobulbar effect include sudden bursts of laughing or crying that last for several minutes (usually 15-20 minutes). He further stated that often the trigger for laughter may be trivial, meaning that the emotional activity is disproportionate to the arousing event. Others present may not find it funny and so the person suffering from a laughing disorder may be embarrassed by their reaction.

How to get relief
The expert continued, ‘Deep, comfortable and slow breathing while laughing can help. Focusing your mind on another subject can also help. Relaxing the muscles around the shoulders, neck and chest wall is also helpful. Neurologist Dr. Alok Mandlia told Firstpost that if the problem is not due to neurological deficits, it could be due to psychological factors.
