Sunil Chhetri made his debut against Pakistan in the year 2005. The match played in Quetta on 12 June ended in a 1-1 draw. Chhetri scored one goal in that match. In the year 2007, the Indian football team won the Nehru Cup match against Syria. In 2008, he scored a hat-trick in the AFC Challenge Cup final against Tajikistan. In the same year, the Indian football team won the Challenge Cup and qualified for the AFC Asian Cup. Sunil Chhetri scored two goals in the year 2011. In the year 2012, the Indian team won the Nehru Cup in the presence of Sunil Chhetri. They defeated Cameroon in the final.

Indian football team remained unbeaten for 13 matches
In the year 2017, Sunil Chhetri took over the captaincy of India and made the team unbeaten for 13 matches. This year the Indian team also qualified for the Asia Cup. In the very next year i.e. 2018, Sunil Chhetri scored a hat-trick. He achieved this feat against Chinese Taipei in the Intercontinental Cup. This year, the star Indian footballer played his 100th match against Kenya. In 2018 itself, Chhetri equaled Lionel Messi’s record of 64 goals. Scored twice against Thailand in the 2019 Asian Cup.

In the year 2021, Chhetri created another record. He became the joint sixth highest goalscorer of all time. This year he equaled Messi’s 80 goals. The Indian football team qualified for the Asian Cup in the year 2022. In the same year, Sunil Chhetri became the second highest goalscorer of all time in Asia. By 2023, Chhetri will be the third highest international goalscorer after Messi and Ronaldo.
