India Diesel Demand: Diesel demand remained flat at 35.4 lakh tonnes on a monthly basis in the first fortnight of May.

Demand for diesel fell in June due to less travel due to extreme heat in some parts of the country. Fuel sales, which traditionally rise during elections, have bucked the trend this year and are falling on a monthly basis. This decline continues even after the general elections are over.

Diesel sales fell 2.3% in April and 2.7% in March

Diesel sales during June 1 to 15 fell by 3.9 percent to 39.5 lakh tonnes compared to the same period last year. Demand for the country’s most widely used fuel fell by 2.3 percent in April and 2.7 percent in March. A decrease of 1.1 percent was recorded in May.

Apart from election campaigning, the summer harvest season and intense heat increase the demand for air conditioning in cars, which should increase fuel consumption. However, this year the trend has reversed.

Decline in petrol and diesel prices has no impact on sales.

In mid-March, petrol and diesel prices per liter increased by Rs. 2 was cut, ending a nearly two-year hiatus of rate hikes, which should boost sales. Petrol sales fell by 3.6 percent month-on-month compared to consumption of 14.7 lakh tonnes during May 1-15. Diesel demand remained flat on a monthly basis compared to consumption of 35.4 lakh tonnes in the first fortnight of May.

Diesel is the most consumed fuel in India, accounting for about 40 percent of all petroleum products consumed. The transport sector accounts for 70 percent of the total diesel sales in the country. It is the main fuel used in agricultural fields including harvesters and tractors.

Demand for aviation fuel (ATF) increased by 2.3 percent year-on-year to 331,000 tonnes between June 1 and 15, 2024.
Cooking gas (LPG) demand rose 0.1 percent year-on-year to 12.4 lakh tonnes between June 1 and 15.
