The league stage of T20 World Cup 2024 is over. The Super-8 round will start from Wednesday. India will play their first Super-8 match against Afghanistan on Thursday. Afghanistan suffered a crushing defeat by 104 runs at the hands of joint hosts West Indies in the last league match on Tuesday. West Indies posted a mammoth score of 218/5 and Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan were bowled out for 114 in 16.2 overs. Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott has warned the Rashid brigade ahead of the Super-8 match.
In fact, Afghanistan conceded 60 runs in two overs against West Indies. Trott said that the Afghanistan team will have to make sure that they do not make the mistake of conceding 60 runs in two overs against Team India. Let us tell you that Azmatullah Umarzai scored 36 runs in the fourth over in the Powerplay against West Indies. At the same time, captain Rashid conceded 24 runs in the 18th over. Leg-spinner Rashid proved to be the most expensive bowler. He conceded 45 runs in a spell of four overs and took no wickets.
When asked about the lesson learned from the West Indies match, Trott said, “If we don’t start the over well, we have to finish the over quickly.” Today we gave away 60 runs in two overs and that’s part of the match and yes, I’m disappointed with the batting that we didn’t get close to the trot but also said that the Afghanistan players have to make sure they play the shots in the wind direction.
The head coach said, “I think we saw that the West Indies used the wind well. I mean, the wind was towards the long, long boundary line but still the shots went over it easily. I think maybe we could have bowled a little bit better and forced them to bat the other way.” Let us tell you that Afghanistan entered the Super-8 after winning three consecutive league matches. Afghanistan are second in Group C with 6 points.
