India’s DP Manu won the men’s javelin gold medal at the Taiwan Open 2024 with a throw of 81.58 meters in Taipei on Saturday. The Asian Athletics Championship silver medalist recorded his best throw in his last attempt. The Taiwan Open is a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze level competition. This also earns players important ranking points. Manu started with a throw of 78.32m, while his second attempt was 76.80m.
The 24-year-old upped his game with javelin throws of 80.59m and 81.52m in his third and fifth attempts. He did not make a valid throw on his fourth attempt. However, this performance was far from Manu’s personal best of 84.35m. This is lower than his current season best of 82.06, which came at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar last month. He finished second behind Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra in the Federation Cup.
Manu, who finished sixth at the World Championships last year, is yet to qualify for the Paris Olympics, for which the qualification mark is 85.50m. Chopra and Kishore have already qualified for the Olympics. Among other Indian athletes, Nitya Ramraj finished second in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.23 seconds. Earlier in the day, during the heat race, he clocked a personal best of 13.12 seconds.
In the women’s 400m final, VK Vismaya finished third with a time of 53.49 seconds. Federation Cup winner Rosie Mina finished sixth in the women’s pole vault event with an effort of 3.75m.
