Explore old memories
Jatin Sapru, who was present in the commentary panel, recalled some old memories of Sunil Gavaskar. Jatin said that all Indian viewers smell the scent of ‘The Great Sunil Gavaskar’ as soon as they arrive in the West Indies. Next he asks, do you remember that little tune? In our country tunes are not made for players, here a song is made for you. To this Gavaskar says – Yes, sometimes I remember. Apart from this I also remember that India beat West Indies here for the first time. Our team defeated them here.
This is the case
Sunil Gavaskar went to West Indies in 1971 for his debut series. In this series, the Indian team defeated the Caribbean team. Team India won that Test series 1-0. This was India’s first Test series win in the West Indies. Sunil Gavaskar’s performance during this period was outstanding. Famous calypso singer Willard Herrick composed a song inspired by this. The lyrics of the song read, ‘He was Gavaskar, the true master. Like a wall, we couldn’t get Gavaskar out at all. You know West Indies couldn’t get Gavaskar out at all.
