New Delhi. Only a batsman knows the pain of being dismissed for 0 in any format of cricket. If a batsman is dismissed on his own ball or on the very first ball of the match, this misery is compounded. So far in international cricket, many batsmen have made a ‘golden duck’ by getting out on the first ball. There are some batsmen who have lost their wicket on the very first ball of the match. Talking about Test cricket, so far more than two and a half dozen batsmen have been dismissed on the first ball of the match. Among them, South Africa’s Jimmy Cook, West Indies’ Leon Garrick and Afghanistan’s Abdul Malik faced the embarrassment of being dismissed on the very first ball of their debut Test. There are only two batsmen in world cricket who have lost wickets on the first ball of the match more than twice in Tests.
India’s Sunil Gavaskar and Bangladesh’s Hannan Sarkar have been dismissed three times on the first ball of the match in Test cricket. Among them, Gavaskar is counted among the best openers in world cricket. Sunny broke Don Bradman’s record of 29 centuries and became the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The case of Hannan from Bangladesh is surprising. All three times he has been dismissed on the first ball in a Test against the same team. Not only that, he fell victim to the same bowler all three times. In the history of cricket, England’s Archie McLaren was dismissed on the first ball against Australia in 1894 in the Melbourne Test. He was preyed upon by fast bowler Arthur Cunningham.
‘Sunny’ was the first batsman to be dismissed thrice on the first ball.
Gavaskar popularly known as ‘Sunny’ became the first batsman to be dismissed three times in Test cricket. He was dismissed by England’s Geoff Arnold on the first ball in the 1974 Birmingham Test. Sunny was caught out by wicketkeeper Alan Knott. After this, the Indian batsman was caught on the very first ball of the match by West Indies’ Malcolm Marshall in the 1983 Kolkata Test and Pakistan’s Imran Khan in the 1987 Jaipur Test. Gavaskar was caught by wicketkeeper Jeff Duzon in Kolkata Test and Javed Miandad in Jaipur Test.
Hannan fell victim to Collins three times.
As for Bangladesh’s Hannan Sarkar, he became the second batsman to be dismissed thrice on the first ball of a Test in June 2004. It took Gavaskar almost 13 years (1974 to 1987) to be dismissed on the first ball of a Test three times, while Sarkar was dismissed on the first ball of a Test three times in a span of three years. Gavaskar was dismissed on the first ball of the match three times in his long career of 125 Tests, while Sarkar lost his wicket on the first ball of the match three times in his short career of 17 Tests. In the Test against the West Indies, Hannan was dismissed on the first ball three times and the bowler who dismissed him all three times was Pedro Collins. Left-arm fast bowler Collins first bowled Hannan on the first ball of the Dhaka Test in December 2002. He then repeated this feat in the 2004 Grass Islet and Kingston Tests. In both these Tests, Hannan was lbw on the first ball of the match.
5 bowlers, including Kapil, have taken wickets twice on the first ball of the Test.
Besides Collis (three times), England’s Geoff Arnold, New Zealand’s Richard Headley, India’s Kapil Dev, Sri Lanka’s Suranga Akmal and Australia’s Mitchell Starc have also taken wickets more than once on the first ball of a Test match. All these bowlers except Sunil Gavaskar have taken the wickets of New Zealand’s John Morrison twice, Headley has taken the wickets of Australia’s Keith Stockpole and India’s WV Raman. Kapil Dev took the wickets of Pakistan’s Mohsin Khan and South Africa’s Mohsin Khan, Lakmal dismissed West Indies’ Chris Gayle and India’s KL Rahul and Starc dismissed Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne and England’s Rory Burns on the first ball. of the match.

Gavaskar and Hannan were also dismissed on the first ball in ODIs
Apart from Tests, Gavaskar and Hannan Sarkar have also lost wickets on the first ball of ODIs. On 9 December 1980, in an ODI match of the Benson Hedges World Series Cup in Perth, New Zealand’s Richard Headley had Gavaskar caught by wicketkeeper Warren Lees on the first ball. However, despite Gavaskar getting out on the first ball of the match, India won the match by 5 runs. Similarly, Hannan was dismissed on the first ball of the ODI match against Sri Lanka in World Cup 2003. Sri Lankan left-handed fast bowler Chaminda Was bowled Hannan on the first ball of the Peter Moritzburg ODI on 14 February 2003. Vas took four wickets including a hat-trick in the first over of the match and Sri Lanka won the ODI by 10 wickets.
